Lomond Plant Nursery is a conservation nursery growing rare plants and locally collected seed from within Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. Plants and trees grown here will eventually be planted out in the National Park as part of restoration projects. The nursery welcomes volunteers and is a hub for nature engagement and learning new skills.  

Lomond Plant Nursery is supporting nature restoration across Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park by;  

  • Growing native plants adapted to the local climate (‘local provenance’), and  
  • Enabling people to play an active role in restoring nature. 

The nursery will grow trees and plants from locally collected seed, prioritising species that are rare, threatened, or hard to source elsewhere. By keeping plants local from seed to site, it will help conserve genetic diversity, reduce biosecurity risk, and ensure restoration projects are resourced with the right plants for the landscapes and habitats within the National Park. 

Alongside plant production, the nursery will provide opportunities for volunteering, learning and connection with nature. It will support skills development for people of various abilities, help grow local green skills, and enable more people — particularly those living within the National Park — to meaningfully contribute to nature recovery. 

The nursery will work in close partnership with land managers, communities, education providers and conservation organisations. Through collaboration and shared learning, it will strengthen capacities across the National Park. 

Landscape Connections

As part of the ambitious Loch Lomond & The Trossachs Landscape Connections Initiative, the Countryside Trust is developing a local network of nurseries. This project will support current and future nurseries to work collaboratively to strengthen the supply of local provenance plants for nature restoration projects across the National Park. Collaboration could include the sharing of resources, capacity, knowledge and learnings.

How Lomond Plant Nursery Came to Life

Lomond Nursery was set up in 2025 at the RSPB’s Loch Lomond reserve in Gartocharn, as part of the Wild Strathfillan Initiative, with the support of the Nature Restoration Fund, Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park Authority, and generous private funders. It is one of two nurseries established through Wild Strathfillan, alongside the Glenfalloch nursery just south of Crianlarich.  

Volunteering with the Lomond Plant Nursery

You can be part of it.  Help grow the future of nature restoration across Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park.  Ways to get involved:

  • Seed Explorers Help find and collect seeds that will become future habitats. You’ll gain hands-on experience identifying native plant species, monitoring seed development, and collecting seed for ecological restoration projects.
  • Nursery Plant Stewards Support the day-to-day running of the nursery and learn practical conservation skills, including seed processing, plant propagation, plant care, stock monitoring, and preparing plants for restoration projects.

Funding will enable Lomond Plant Nursery to grow more local-provenance native plants, expand skills and volunteering opportunities, and deliver nature restoration at a meaningful scale across the National Park.  

Support from individuals, organisations, businesses and corporate partners can help cover essential costs such as compost, tools, seed collection materials, staff time and volunteer training.
